Quantum advantage in real-world applications may be closer than you think... We're excited to share our new publication: "Resource Analysis of Low-Overhead Transversal Architectures for Reconfigurable Atom Arrays" 📜 arXiv Paper: https://lnkd.in/g_7vtTz4 In this research, the team from QuEra Computing, Harvard University, and Yale University proposed a novel architecture leveraging dynamically reconfigurable qubit connectivity and rapid transversal gate operations. Our architecture achieves runtime speed-ups on the order of the quantum error-correcting code distance d, potentially accelerating computation times by an order of magnitude. 📈 As an illustrative benchmark, the models show that factoring a 2048-bit RSA number could be accomplished in just 5.6 days using approximately 19 million qubits, for a 1 ms QEC cycle. This represents nearly a 50-fold improvement in speed compared to prior estimates, without expanding the space required. In this work, we design and perform • Efficient transversal functional units for key algorithm sub-routines, minimizing interaction distance and decoding volume • Effective models for logical performance in transversal architectures • Optimization of large-scale algorithms on a transversal architecture By modularly decomposing and optimizing quantum algorithms at the subroutine level, the team achieved space-time savings that are competitive with leading methods such as qLDPC codes—highlighting the potential for future combined strategies. 🚀 Quantum Momentum: Chicago is Levelling Up Following on from my recent post about the ambitious Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park - here comes a major development 👇 💡 Infleqtion is bringing Illinois' first utility-scale, neutral atom quantum computer to Chicago as part of a $50M, 4-year initiative. 📍 Located at the South Side’s new Quantum Park and in collaboration with the National Quantum Algorithms Center, this project will: 🔬 Launch the next-gen Sqale quantum platform 🧠 Create high-skill jobs across R&D, engineering, and commercialisation 🤝 Support major government-backed programs like ARPA-E and the U.S. Army 📡 Make Chicago the HQ for Infleqtion’s global quantum computing efforts 🌆 What was once industrial land is now at the heart of the global quantum race. If you get into superconducting quantum computing, chances are you’ll hear about Jens Koch. Usually early. That’s because Koch - alongside Michel Devoret, Steven Girvin, Jay Gambetta, Alexandre Blais, David Schuster, Robert Schoelkopf, Andrew Houck  (yes, this wasn’t a citation list - it was the actual author list) authored one of the most influential papers in the field back in 2007: “𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘦-𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘲𝘶𝘣𝘪𝘵 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳 𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘳 𝘣𝘰𝘹”. Their proposal? The 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗾𝘂𝗯𝗶𝘁. It wasn’t a reinvention—but a refinement. A “modest modification,” as they described it, that fundamentally changed the trajectory of superconducting qubit development. 🔹 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮: Add a large shunt capacitor to the Cooper pair box to increase EJ/EC and suppress charge noise exponentially. 🔹 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲-𝗼𝗳𝗳: Reduced anharmonicity—but still sufficient to isolate a qubit subspace. 🔹 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁: Strong suppression of charge noise and significantly improved dephasing times, while retaining straightforward microwave control and circuit simplicity. Today, the transmon is the 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗮𝘂𝗹𝘁. Google uses it in tunable form for Sycamore and Willow. As does IBM and many others like Rigetti Computing, IQM Quantum Computers, Qolab, Oxford Quantum Circuits (OQC) and so on. It’s the workhorse for a reason: • Frequencies in the 3–8 GHz range • Fast gates with high fidelity • Coherence times regularly above 100 µs • Well-understood coupling and readout strategies    That said, the transmon isn’t without drawbacks. Its limitations, such as low anharmonicity, have spurred the development of alternative qubit architectures. Still, recent work from both Michel Devoret’s group and Alexandre Blais' team shows that the transmon is far from obsolete. With targeted refinements such as engineering the dispersive shift to boost readout fidelity, it continues to evolve and outperform expectations. 📸 Credits: Houck et al. We partnered with UCL to study quantum magnetism using Quantinuum’s high performance systems.   In this latest paper, the joint team studied a dynamical quantum phase transition (where a system suddenly changes its behavior) using “matrix product states”. Matrix product states are some of the best classical methods for simulating how quantum systems change with time, but classical computers limit how much can be done with them. Great to see how a computational physics research lab is using Pulse's API to extract LaTeX equations and mathematical notation from their 40+ year archive of papers. Their team built a specialized pipeline that preserves the semantic structure between equations, preserving relationships between variables, theorems, and proofs. What's remarkable is how Pulse correctly identifies and extracts nested mathematical structures (matrices within summations within integrals) while maintaining proper symbol relationships. Our mission is to turn previously inaccessible computational knowledge into structured, searchable data that accelerates novel research. Quantum magic 🪄 Sandia researchers and partners at Quantinuum and University of California, Davis validated a new algorithm for error-resistant quantum computation. In a paper published by American Physical Society, the team details a new and more efficient method for preparing “magic states,” enabling future quantum computers to run programs even if one component fails, a concept called fault-tolerance. “A magic state is a particular superposition state into which a qubit can be initialized,” explained Sandia researcher Robin Blume-Kohout. “It can be difficult to prepare a magic state, but once accomplished, it becomes very useful in calculations. It’s like a $100 gift card that you can redeem for cool stuff whenever you want. Five of the nearly twenty companies chosen to enter the initial stage of DARPA's Quantum Benchmarking Initiative are Chicago Quantum Exchange corporate partners! Atom Computing, IBM, Quantinuum, Rigetti Computing, and Xanadu have been selected for Stage A of the program, in which they will characterize their unique concepts for creating a useful, fault-tolerant quantum computer within a decade. DARPA recently announced that Microsoft and PsiQuantum are entering the third and final phase of the Underexplored Systems for Utility-Scale Quantum Computing (US2QC) program, a pilot effort that was expanded to become QBI.
