Payments on Ark assume the sender and Ark server do not collude to double-spend—as long as either the sender or the Ark server act honestly, the payment is secure. To achieve full trustlessness, you must refresh the received payment in a subsequent round (expected to be every hour).
You can also make self-custodial payments over Lightning using Ark, which are also instant, and as secure as any other Lightning payment."

      "text": "Ark ensures self-custody through unilateral exit rights. At any time, your balance on Ark is backed by pre-signed bitcoin transactions that you hold off-chain for safekeeping. You can broadcast these transactions at any time to retrieve your bitcoin on-chain, without needing permission from the Ark server. The server cannot prevent this process, even if it's offline or acts maliciously. This cryptographic guarantee means you always maintain control over your funds.
Furthermore, all operations on Ark (payments, refreshes, off-boards) are atomic — you can't spend your bitcoin without getting what you're owed, eliminating counterparty risk."

However, Ark operates on a client–server model, so different implementations don’t need to be tightly interoperable or follow a shared specification. Interoperability between Ark servers will be managed via the Lightning Network, allowing payments between users on different Ark servers.
As Ark is still in its early stages, major differences between implementations haven’t surfaced yet, but we’ll update this section as things evolve."

Ark can also simplify integrating and using Lightning, making onboarding smoother for application developers and end users.
For some payment use-cases, Ark may be a better fit than Lightning, so it will inevitably compete for certain classes of transaction—but we believe that only strengthens both the Lightning Network and the bitcoin ecosystem overall."
