| A frontend engineer applied to Blinkit for an SDE-1 role. They knew DSA, understood core CS fundamentals, and had good industry experience, but still got rejected in the machine coding round. Another frontend engineer went for SDE-1 at Swiggy. Despite a solid grasp on algorithms, they got tripped up by a high-level design (HLD) question and got rejected. Stories like these are everywhere now. Companies are moving past pure DSA and want engineers who can build real features, design systems, and write scale code. Swiggy, Zomato, Nykaa, Upstox, RazorPay, Navi, and Cars24 all run machine coding rounds in their interviews for frontend roles. ► So, what exactly is the machine coding round? This round tests how you take a real-world product requirement and turn it into a working application or feature, under time pressure, with messy constraints, and with the expectation that your code could go live. You might be asked to build a mini-dashboard, interactive table, chat UI, or even an end-to-end feature, using your tech stack of choice. ► What do you have to do? Write production-ready, modular, and readable code Show you can handle edge cases, loading, and errors. Think about performance, scalability, and user experience. Make smart design choices for components, state, and data flow. Explain your approach as you build, and adapt on the fly to feedback. ► Best practices for cracking this round: Clarify requirements at the start; don’t assume anything. Sketch a component and data structure plan before jumping into code. Structure files and logic for easy reading and extension. Build in increments, test and show your progress at milestones. Practice with real problems from actual interview experiences, not just sample projects. Most importantly, remember that companies want to see how you think, not just what you know. | Not gonna lie, cracking service-based companies is way easier than what most people think — especially compared to PBC prep. If you're aiming for companies like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, etc., you don't need to grind 1000+ LeetCode mediums or get deep into DP, Graphs, Segment Trees, and all that. What actually works is clarity on basics + consistency. Here’s literally all you need to focus on 👇 🧠 DSA (don’t overdo it) Arrays & Strings (palindrome, frequency, sliding window basics) HashMap / HashSet Sorting & Searching (including Binary Search) Stack/Queue – basic problems Time & Space complexity 💻 Language Basics Stick to one language (Java, C++, or Python). | SDE 3+ hiring is a TRAP in 2025. It's not testing what you know, Here’s the secret…. “It's testing how fast you can decide when you don't know.“ I saw a close friend, SDE-3 at a top tech company, almost blow offers from Google and Atlassian because he froze in the first 10 minutes of open-ended design questions. He knew Kafka, sharding, backpressure, everything. Still he struggled only because he couldn't decompose the problem cleanly in his interview. Here’s what he told me to focus on: ✅Can you define MVP boundaries within minutes? ✅Can you spot critical constraints immediately (latency vs throughput, consistency vs availability)? ✅Can you narrate tradeoffs live without waiting for hints? He said to me: "Shumbul, if you waste time drawing big diagrams before scoping, you’re already behind." This advise from him made me realise that if you're preparing for a serious move for senior roles at PBCs, you must focus on fast scoping, constraint prioritization clean communication. | Few months back i attended the WarnerBros interview for SDE 2, below are the questions that they asked. Q1. Minimum no. of platforms needed to accommodate trains based on arrival & departure times (DSA). Q2. Which version of Java are you using? What new features are you applying in day-to-day work? Q3. How do you connect to a MySQL DB using Spring Boot? Q4. What is a connection pool? How do you manage it, and what happens when the pool is exhausted? Q5. Purpose of RabbitMQ – how does it work, solve distribution, handle failures & acknowledgments? Q6. What is Elasticsearch? How does it query data so fast behind the scenes? Q7. If a user uploads a file with thousands of records, how do you design the system so the user sees “success” immediately while processing continues in background? Q8. How does PhonePe (or similar large-scale systems) handle deployments? Q9. If you apply to any fast-scaling product company, you better be ready for the machine coding round. This is not a DSA round. DSA is just a small part of it, you have to code a fully working system, UI is not mandatory. What kind of problems are asked? Great candidates clarify scope first. → Clarify constraints. Time limit? How many entries? Expected throughput? If you're building a cache, is it 100 items or 1 million? This changes everything, from data structures to architecture. → Break it into parts. Don’t dive in headfirst. Break the system down into components. Models → Services → Input/Output layer. Think in responsibilities, not code. → Design for now, not forever. Don’t waste time building for edge cases no one asked for. Write code that works for 80% of the problem — cleanly. Leave TODOs or comments for edge handling if you're short on time. → Keep it running. Always. Build it like you’re building a real product. Run it after each small change. No interviewer wants to see a 200-line code dump that doesn’t compile. → Use classes. Not chaos. Even if it’s CLI-based, use OOP. Encapsulate logic. Think testability. No one wants to debug a main() with 80 if-else blocks. → Write like someone else will read it. Good variable names. Consistent structure. Readable formatting. Because in the real world, readability is a feature. This is what they look for: Not just if you can code.
