| a friend just texted me: "Hearing there are 'senior devs' who are very skeptical of AI generated code (aka not using any AI tools) at a startup I’m interviewing with… interesting that they are still employed in a startup against this backdrop [see image]" my response: seems like there are just different games being played those who embrace AI as a medium for expressing ideas are playing the right game — they're not just treating it as a "better tool" if you've been in industry awhile, you may need an intellectual reboot to see it last night i went to a VentureBeat event; mostly enterprise folks… several people (from IBM, Walgreens, etc) asked about “change mgmt” and how to convince their teammates to adopt AI tools… someone raised the question of brown-field vs green-field opportunity w/r/t AI… is it worth it to upskill existing workers or better to just start fresh…? Great question! for people entrenched in a job fiefdom, e.g. where the power players and how to execute reliably, the perceived risks of novelty are infinite. they're not wrong, they're just not interested in changing the game they've mastered. aaand also, developers are the self-disclosed laziest people in the world. but they're incredibly productive because they'll happily spend a week automating some repetitive task so they never have think about it again. this is why generative AI and coding go so well together: the existing developer culture despises inefficiency, and is always looking for ways to cut corners in favor of a more elegant, efficient route. this is because developers are incredibly sensitive to the tiniest impediment to achieving persistent flow states. it's like noticing a typo in that green-on-black matrix screensaver and instead of ignoring it as a minor irritant, they'd prefer to rewrite the screensaver from scratch to fix it. but for non-developery roles, this gameplay is totally foreign. maintaining those impediments ensures job security. since they know how to navigate around known obstacles, their tacit knowledge is an insurance policy against obsolescence — for now. so it makes that sense that some senior devs, whose sunk costs could represent hundreds of thousands or millions of $$$ into existing, _stable_ systems might resist the quasi-non-deterministic output of AI coding tools. except (as they say) there is more than one way to skin a cat. here's a new game to invite resistants to play: have the skeptical senior devs review several blind PRs, all submitted by “new,” unfamiliar contributors (a mix of humans and AIs), and see if they prefer the human or AI-generated code. if the AI code really is as good as many of us believe, the experience might snap them out of their sunk-cost fallacies. because until you surprise yourself with what these tools can actually accomplish—in a blind taste test—you’ll never really see what winning this new game looks like, even if it's happening right in front of your eyes. 21 14 Comments | https://www.linkedin.com/posts/factoryjoe_a-friend-just-texted-me-hearing-there-are-activity-7358956287209955328-KZPc?trk=public_profile_relatedPosts |

| I’ve been working on the theory of why small, shippable factories are the perfect inversion to the centralized prefab factory model. It all collapsed into one line of math (credit to Gilles Retsin): Factory Efficiency = Usage × (Throughput × Product Value ) / ( CapEx + Deployment OpEx) The idea is that the closer you can drive Usage to 100 % while keeping the denominator tiny, the faster the flywheel spins. A shippable microfactory tackles this by primarily focusing on a high Usage factor. Because the microfactory can be packed up afterwards and reused, its CapEx gets amortized over multiple projects, effectively raising its overall Usage across the year. If one project alone doesn’t fully occupy the factory, it can simply roll over to another job to maintain high Usage. Its CapEx is often an order of magnitude lower than a centralized factory (< $1M vs. $10-50M min), so the breakeven throughput is more achievable on a small pipeline of work. The real breakthrough here is portability. There is near-zero stranded capital and almost no idle time. To flesh this theory out, I wrote 3000 words on the topic for Brad Hargreaves and Thesis Driven. | The most recent Queued Up report from Berkeley Lab is out. Steven Zhang and I are proud to be listed as coauthors on this edition. The Interconnection.fyi team worked closely with Joseph Rand and the rest of the LBNL team to provide the data that powers this year's analysis. Supporting this level of research is core to our mission of bringing transparency to the wholesale energy markets. The 2025 edition (covering data through the end of 2024) highlights some significant shifts in the landscape: Active Capacity: 2024 closed with nearly 2,300 GW of generation and storage seeking interconnection. Changing Mix: Active natural gas capacity increased by 72% year over year, while solar and storage saw slight decreases in total queue volume. The Backlog: 408 GW of capacity already has an executed or draft interconnection agreement but has not yet reached commercial operations. Timelines: For projects built between 2018 and 2024, the median duration from request to operation has doubled compared to the early 2000s. This report is the definitive annual benchmark for the industry and provides a vital baseline as we begin to see the implementation of FERC Order 2023. The analysis in this report is based on our EOY 2024 data snapshot. Since then, we have continued to track and update these queues every single day. | Last year, we invested in Cognichip: what we expect to be a generational semiconductor company by making chip design as simple and accessible as vibe coding. They came out of stealth today with a vision for how we will design chips in the future. Today, building chips is nowhere nearly as simple as uttering these commands. In fact, this very task requires going through thousands of pages of documents and hundreds of hours of experienced engineer time. It gets worse with every tech node. Chip design is tedious, which is why chips cost a fortune to design, and take forever to bring to market, resulting in only a handful of (giant) chip companies. | With RL techniques like GRPO, it’s become easy to fine-tune small models to outperform foundation models on vertical tasks. We’re open sourcing Osmosis-Apply-1.7B: a small model that merges code (similar to Cursor’s instant apply) better than foundation models. Links in comments! Using foundation models for high specificity, low complexity tasks like code merging can be overkill - instead, it’s better to use a specialized model instead for higher performance and latency. We fine-tuned the model on 100K real-world code commits where the model needs to merge a code edit snippet into an original code snippet. On the test dataset (subset of CommitPackFT), foundation model performance ranged between 0.77-0.93 reward score. In comparison, Osmosis-Apply-1.7B achieved a 0.98 reward score - while also being 3X-5X more affordable than the next cheaper model AND ~10X faster! Why this matters: the best AI agents use multiple models to ensure task specialization and reliability at scale - on top of cost and latency benefits as well. | I previously helped build Anchorage's high-value, low-volume institutional custody infrastructure (100 / transactions a day at $100m each). Now at Bastion, we’re building institutional infrastructure to enable 100m transactions a day at minimal cost. What I've observed is that most enterprises underestimate the significance of their custody choice today, on future features and default to an “insurance mindset”. Here’s what I mean: some companies pick custody like insurance, like a tick box exercise. The issue is that different custody architectures have different pros and cons. The three custody architectures: - Segregated custody delivers individual control and transparent on-chain tracking but sacrifices cost efficiency at scale. - Omnibus custody enables cost-efficient operations and simple reconciliation but prevents individual asset control, transparency, and DeFi integrations - Hybrid models offer "default omnibus with segregated capabilities on demand" higher complexity but maximum product optionality. In this sense, pure omnibus can't handle complex treasury flows and modern retail flows. Pure segregated won't scale to internet-scale consumer volume economics outside of very few ecosystems, and expose too much information publicly until better compliant privacy-enabling solutions come to market. That's why hybrid capabilities matter. Enterprises need default omnibus efficiency with segregated options on demand.
