My usage fits into these categories\r\n\r\n1. chrome inspector wiring\r\n1. command-line checks\r\n1. custom error stack decoration\r\n1. custom inspection\r\n\r\nThe API run down as follows:\r\n\r\n* ~~`process.binding(\"config\")`~~\r\n  - ~~experimentalREPLAwait _(command line checks)_~~\r\n  - ~~experimentalWorker _(command line checks)_~~\r\n  - ~~exposeInternals _(command line checks)_~~\r\n  - ~~preserveSymlinks _(command line checks)_~~\r\n  - ~~preserveSymlinksMain _(command line checks)_~~\r\n\r\n* `process.binding(\"inspector\")`\r\n  - callAndPauseOnStart _(inspector wiring; other utils like [ndb](https://github.com/GoogleChromeLabs/ndb)_ use this too)\r\n  - consoleCall _(inspector wiring)_\r\n  - ~~open _(only existence checks, much like [Node does](https://github.com/nodejs/node/blob/b7c7c0c4961fd4e382b7cadcfb7c8360b8904a4a/lib/internal/modules/cjs/helpers.js#L113))_~~\r\n\r\n* `process.binding(\"util\")`\r\n  - decorated_private_symbol _(error stack decoration)_\r\n  - getProxyDetails _(custom inspection)_\r\n  - setHiddenValue _(error stack decoration)_\r\n  - safeGetenv\r\n\r\nFor chrome inspector wiring there has been some work to expose things like `originalConsole` (#21659), but more in this area is needed.\r\n\r\nFor command-line checks the answer may be to use `process.execArgv`, but a more `config` like object form would be handy.\r\n\r\nFor custom error stack decoration there is early feelers in #21958.\r\n\r\nCustom inspection helpers like `getProxyDetails`/`getPromiseDetails` and `safeGetenv` have nothing simmering at the moment.\r\n\r\n**Updated:**\r\n\r\nI ~~crossed through~~ API that have user-facing options.\r\n\r\n**Update:**\r\n\r\nReplaced `process.binding(\"inspector\").open` inferences with `process.config.variables.v8_enable_inspector` checks.","author":{"url":"https://github.com/jdalton","@type":"Person","name":"jdalton"},"datePublished":"2018-08-01T18:00:44.000Z","interactionStatistic":{"@type":"InteractionCounter","interactionType":"https://schema.org/CommentAction","userInteractionCount":39},"url":"https://github.com/22064/node/issues/22064"}
