When a chart is drawn IPython closes the matplotlib figure; when this happens matplotlib calls `gc.collect()` [here](https://github.com/matplotlib/matplotlib/blob/master/lib/matplotlib/_pylab_helpers.py#L93) (there is an another possible gc.collect call [here](https://github.com/matplotlib/matplotlib/blob/master/lib/matplotlib/_pylab_helpers.py#L72)). This causes 5-10s delays, making interactive work uncomfortable.\n\nWhat do you think about removing these calls, or maybe using less aggressive settings, like generation 0 or 1? In my case `gc.collect(0)` and `gc.collect(1)` are instant unlike `gc.collect()` or `gc.collect(2)`.\n\nI've fired a related issue to the IPython bug tracker: https://github.com/ipython/ipython/issues/5795\n","author":{"url":"https://github.com/kmike","@type":"Person","name":"kmike"},"datePublished":"2014-05-06T22:29:32.000Z","interactionStatistic":{"@type":"InteractionCounter","interactionType":"https://schema.org/CommentAction","userInteractionCount":0},"url":"https://github.com/3044/matplotlib/issues/3044"}
