{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"DiscussionForumPosting","headline":"[MNT]: CI: pygobject fails to install during ubuntu-22.04 GitHub Actions jobs","articleBody":"### Summary\n\nWhen the Ubuntu 22.04 (both x86 and ARM) test jobs currently run in GitHub Actions, [`girepository-1.0` is installed](https://github.com/matplotlib/matplotlib/blob/7d5d0278fb5296a368a1ef910e67a8fa9a1f2fb8/.github/workflows/tests.yml#L172) as a system dependency, and [`PyGObject` is installed](https://github.com/matplotlib/matplotlib/blob/7d5d0278fb5296a368a1ef910e67a8fa9a1f2fb8/.github/workflows/tests.yml#L266) from PyPI without any version range specifier.\n\nThis causes the `PyGObject` Python package to fail to install, because [from version v3.52 onwards](https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/pygobject/-/blob/e3dee9719e7249acfa7e78a3bbae251301a134a4/NEWS#L9-10), it has a hard dependency on `girepository-2.0` (a major upgrade of that library).\n\nThis is illustrated by recent build logs from commit 7d5d0278fb5296a368a1ef910e67a8fa9a1f2fb8, both on Ubuntu 22.04 (x86) for Python 3.11, and also on Ubuntu 22.04 (ARM) for Python 3.12:\n\n  * https://github.com/matplotlib/matplotlib/actions/runs/14186202430/job/39741858224#step:9:462\n  * https://github.com/matplotlib/matplotlib/actions/runs/14186202430/job/39741858471#step:9:305\n\nThis is related to the changes in #29765; I'd mentioned briefly and obliquely that adding some version pinning might make sense alongside those changes, but hadn't yet suggested it in code:\n\n\u003e A compatible possibility would be to place an upper-bound on the version of `PyGObject` installed during jobs on previous versions of Ubuntu.\n\nI think that's what we should do (add a version pin - similar to the one in place for MacOS currently - for the Ubuntu 22.04 matrix jobs).\n\n### Proposed fix\n\nUse the existing `pygobject-ver` GitHub Actions CI matrix variable to pin the Python `PyGObject` package version to `\u003c3.52.0` in Ubuntu 22.04 test workflows, where `girepository-1.0` is installed.\n\nEdit: add hyperlink to `pygobject.git` v3.52 release notes.","author":{"url":"https://github.com/jayaddison","@type":"Person","name":"jayaddison"},"datePublished":"2025-04-01T10:05:06.000Z","interactionStatistic":{"@type":"InteractionCounter","interactionType":"https://schema.org/CommentAction","userInteractionCount":2},"url":"https://github.com/29844/matplotlib/issues/29844"}
