It's use is discouraged and none of our own scales actually use it at least since #12831.\n\nTo simplify our code, we should get rid of that parameter.\n\n### Proposed fix\n\nDo we know whether\n\n- downstream libraries add their own Scales via `register_scale()`?\n- user will directly instantiate our own Scale classes?\n \nIf so we need the full deprecation machinery:\n\n1. Make `scale_factory` work with scales have or have not an initial `axis` parameter. Either by try-except with/without this parameter or by introspecting the signature.\n - #29358\n2. Introspect scale classes passed to `register_scale` and warn if they still have the axis argument.\n - #29358 \n3. Make all our scales work with/without the `axis` parameter by adding a suitable decorator to their __init__ functions. - #29988\nOtherwise, we can simplify the transition.\n\n--\n\n*Edit*: Both questions are *yes*, so we need the full deprecation mechanism.","author":{"url":"https://github.com/timhoffm","@type":"Person","name":"timhoffm"},"datePublished":"2024-12-19T15:08:14.000Z","interactionStatistic":{"@type":"InteractionCounter","interactionType":"https://schema.org/CommentAction","userInteractionCount":3},"url":"https://github.com/29349/matplotlib/issues/29349"}
