{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"DiscussionForumPosting","headline":"[Bug]: Pyplot can no longer set axes properties","articleBody":"### Bug summary\r\n\r\nSince Matplotlib 3.8.1, it no longer is possible to set axes properties, neither using Pyplot free functions nor Axis object methods.\r\n\r\nThis persists in the current latest release 3.8.3, and is not observed in 3.8.0.\r\n\r\n### Code for reproduction\r\n\r\n```Python\r\nimport matplotlib.pyplot as plt\r\nimport numpy as np\r\nplt.plot(np.random.randn(100))\r\nplt.xlabel(\"x label\")\r\nplt.show()\r\n```\r\n\r\n\r\n### Actual outcome\r\n\r\nThe \"x label\" text is not shown.
