{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"DiscussionForumPosting","headline":"[Bug]: Font fallback doesn't work on \\mathdefault","articleBody":"### Bug summary\r\n\r\nPer character font fallback (#20740) works great, except in tick labels.\r\n\r\n### Code for reproduction\r\n\r\n```Python\r\nimport matplotlib.pyplot as plt\r\n\r\n# CMU fonts available here : https://www.1001fonts.com/download/cmu.zip\r\nplt.rcParams[\"font.family\"] = [\"CMU Bright\", \"DejaVu Sans\"]\r\n\r\ns = \"There are \\u2212 \\u00D7 in between!\"\r\nplt.figtext(0.18, 0.45, s)\r\nplt.gcf().suptitle(s)\r\nplt.gca().set_title(s)\r\nplt.xscale(\"log\")\r\nplt.xlim(1e-2, 6e-2)\r\nplt.show()\r\n```\r\n\r\n\r\n### Actual outcome\r\n\r\nIn the tick labels, characters not covered by CMU Bright are rendered with a placeholder instead of falling back to DejaVu\r\n\u003cimg width=\"640\" alt=\"image\" src=\"https://github.com/matplotlib/matplotlib/assets/41047847/f6d4a192-9aad-443f-af96-b53b308f18df\"\u003e\r\n\r\n\r\n### Expected outcome\r\n\r\nTick labels should fall back to DejaVu for `\\u2212` (minus sign) and `\\u00D7` (times sign) as in the other text instances.\r\n\r\n### Additional information\r\n\r\nIt seems to happen only with tick labels, other instances of text rendering work as intended in #20740.
