When that module is built by the [nix package manager](https://nixos.org/), the build is performed by a non-root, non-logged-in user, triggering this crash.\r\n\r\nI do not think there is anything actionable here but wanted to open an issue to help anyone else who runs into this. Perhaps detection is possible during backend selection, but it's not entirely obvious to me how to do it robustly. If the team agrees, we can close this issue.\n\n### Operating system\n\nmacOS 13.4.1\n\n### Matplotlib Version\n\n3.7.1\n\n### Matplotlib Backend\n\nmacosx\n\n### Python version\n\n3.10.11\n\n### Jupyter version\n\n_No response_\n\n### Installation\n\nNone","author":{"url":"https://github.com/tjni","@type":"Person","name":"tjni"},"datePublished":"2023-07-12T05:15:08.000Z","interactionStatistic":{"@type":"InteractionCounter","interactionType":"https://schema.org/CommentAction","userInteractionCount":7},"url":"https://github.com/26292/matplotlib/issues/26292"}
