It looks like the width is ignored when calculating the figure size (but it doesn't seem to be ignored when calculating the size of the \"axes\" object?).\r\n\r\n**Actual outcome**\r\n\r\nFirst, when using `fig.gca(projection='3d')`, which is used in the official Matplotlib examples:\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe same thing happens when using `fig.add_subplot(projection='3d')`:\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nInterestingly, a slightly different thing happens when using `fig.add_axes([0, 0, 1, 1], projection='3d')` and `Axes3D(fig)` (which is discouraged?):\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n**Expected outcome**\r\n\r\nWhen using a \"normal\" 2D `Axes`, it looks as expected:\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe output from `fig.add_axes([0, 0, 1, 1])` is also different in this case:\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n**Matplotlib version**\r\n * Operating system: Debian Linux\r\n * Matplotlib version: `master`\r\n * Matplotlib backend (`print(matplotlib.get_backend())`): `module://ipykernel.pylab.backend_inline`\r\n * Python version: 3.7.6\r\n * Jupyter version (if applicable): JupyterLab `master`","author":{"url":"https://github.com/mgeier","@type":"Person","name":"mgeier"},"datePublished":"2020-02-10T17:04:21.000Z","interactionStatistic":{"@type":"InteractionCounter","interactionType":"https://schema.org/CommentAction","userInteractionCount":17},"url":"https://github.com/16463/matplotlib/issues/16463"}
