{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"DiscussionForumPosting","headline":"Feature request: Named cyclers","articleBody":"### Feature Request / Discussion\r\n\r\n**Summary**\r\n\r\nLike we have named colormaps, it would be useful to have named cyclers as well.\r\n\r\nThis would allow code like\r\n\r\n![grafik](https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/2836374/37605543-b0d612fe-2b93-11e8-90fd-801f2c0964eb.png)\r\n\r\nor even by name:\r\n\r\n![grafik](https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/2836374/37605700-0d14775e-2b94-11e8-9c15-34030a1492ec.png)\r\n\r\n**Is it useful?**\r\n\r\n- I think there's a need to efficiently switch cyclers depending on the plot.\r\n- Also, as part of this, we can provide a number of default cyclers.\r\n- Styles are already available, however I have the feeling that they are too broad as I often adapt just the colors and defining a new style for each color scheme seems a bit heavy-weight.\r\n- Apart from the places where a cycler is explicitly used, this could also be used for other methods with a colors argument, e.g. `plt.pie(data, colors='desert')`.\r\n\r\n**What would be needed?**\r\n\r\nSimilar to colormaps:\r\n\r\n- `register_cycler()`\r\n- `get_cycler()`\r\n- a number of default cyclers.\r\n- Maybe the upstream `Cycler` class should get a `name` property.","author":{"url":"https://github.com/timhoffm","@type":"Person","name":"timhoffm"},"datePublished":"2018-03-19T16:07:55.000Z","interactionStatistic":{"@type":"InteractionCounter","interactionType":"https://schema.org/CommentAction","userInteractionCount":29},"url":"https://github.com/10840/matplotlib/issues/10840"}
