Unfortunately in python-2 there is no such codec error-handler.\n\nHappily, the _future_ projects [provides a backported implementation](http://stackoverflow.com/a/28327415/548792).\n\nI suggest to start depending this [_future_ project](http://python-future.org/), for all git-python projects; in the end, \na lot of compatibility code can be substituted.
