{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"DiscussionForumPosting","headline":"DNS Provider for CloudStack","articleBody":"##### ISSUE TYPE\r\n * Feature Idea\r\n\r\n##### COMPONENT NAME\r\n~~~\r\nAPI\r\nManagement Server\r\n~~~\r\n\r\n##### CLOUDSTACK VERSION\r\n~~~\r\nmain\r\n~~~\r\n\r\n##### SUMMARY\r\nMy idea is as follows:\r\n\r\n- A new framework is addedd: Authorative DNS\r\n- This allows for admins and end-users to manage DNS zones\r\n- Different providers implement different APIs, examples:\r\n   - [PowerDNS](https://doc.powerdns.com/authoritative/http-api/index.html) through it's API\r\n   - Public DNS providers like [NS1](https://www.ibm.com/products/ns1-connect/api), [rcodezero](https://my.rcodezero.at/openapi/), [Gandi](https://api.gandi.net/docs/livedns/), [CloudFlare](https://developers.cloudflare.com/api/), etc\r\n   - Your local DNS which applies to your environment\r\n\r\nThese drivers will support various functionality and advertise their capabilities or limitations:\r\n\r\n- Create and delete zones\r\n- Manage records in these zones\r\n- Advertise which record types are supported\r\n- Limit the amount of records in a zone (if any)\r\n- Set a limitation on how low the TTL can be\r\n\r\nPer account and domain we can then set limits:\r\n\r\n- Amount of zones to create\r\n- Amount of creates per zone\r\n\r\nThis would allow for a couple of things:\r\n\r\n- End-users can manage their DNS via the same API as they manage their cloud resources\r\n- End-users can manage DNS via the CloudStack UI\r\n- We can directly create public DNS records for newly created instances\r\n  - You assign a DNS zone to a CloudStack zone\r\n  - Upon VM creation a record is created\r\n    i-xx-yy-vm.myzone.tld A 1.2.3.4\r\n    i-xx-yy-vm.myzone.tld AAAA 2001:db8:af31::61\r\n  - When the VM is removed the DNS records are removed\r\n- Console Proxy and Secondary Storage VMs can point to a working hostname instead of IP-address\r\n  - We can then also support IPv6 for the CP and SS\r\n- We can set the PTR (Reverse DNS) record for a VM after boot","author":{"url":"https://github.com/wido","@type":"Person","name":"wido"},"datePublished":"2024-11-20T16:40:32.000Z","interactionStatistic":{"@type":"InteractionCounter","interactionType":"https://schema.org/CommentAction","userInteractionCount":17},"url":"https://github.com/9958/cloudstack/issues/9958"}
